How to look younger: Dita von Teese lifts lid on simple sleeping habit for youthful skin

Dita Von Teese has become the face of burlesque during the span of her decades-long career, but what’s still surprising to fans is how she looks so youthful at 51.

The model and dancer spoke out about her beauty secrets and how she manages to look ageless at her age during a recent appearance on the Dumb Blonde podcast.

Like many beauty experts, Dita Von Teese praised the benefits of daily sunscreen application and frequent reapplication.

However, applying sunscreen wasn’t the only anti-ageing method she adopted as she emphasised that your sleeping position could be unknowingly ageing you.

During the interview, she revealed: “I wish somebody would have told me when I was young how good it is for you to sleep on your back.”

Dita admitted that mastering this sleeping technique took time, as she had to retrain herself not to sleep on her side.

She noticed that specific wrinkles were forming from sleeping with her face on the pillow. “I taught myself to sleep on my back, and it has worked miracles,” Dita added.

Rupesh Shah, aesthetics practitioner and founder of London Lip Clinic, echoed Dita’s advice, as he stressed to Express.co.uk the importance of sleeping habits.

He said: “Sleeping on your front is one of the most detrimental positions for your skin.

“When sleeping on your stomach, your face is pressed directly into the pillow; this consistent pressure can cause compression wrinkles, and over time these can becoming permanently etched into your skin, especially as your skin loses elasticity as you age.

“It can also lead to fluid accumulation, causing puffiness and bags under the eyes, making you look tired even if you’ve had a great night’s sleep.”

Similarly, sleeping on your side causes your face to be pressed into the pillow – “but if you favour one side over the other, it can lead to asymmetrical ageing”.

The expert continued: “The side of your face that is consistently slept on will experience more compression, leading to more pronounced lines and wrinkles, and even facial distortion over time.”
