Expert shares top three cleaning mistakes – dusting to drying clothes

A cleaning expert has revealed the three common mistakes people make around the house.

TikToker @purdyandfigg is renowned for her handy housework tips and says she honed her skills through trial and error. “I’ve made tons of mistakes when it comes to cleaning, but I’ve made them so you don’t have to,” she said.

However, she’s noticed some people are still making some basic error and took to the social network to help right those wrongs.

Starting with the “biggest one”, she warned against wiping up dust with a damp cloth. Instead, she suggested using a “dry cloth first before cleaning with any product” because a wet cloth simply “pushes the dust around”.

“Secondly, don’t leave your clothes to dry in an underrated room,” she continued.

“The best place is outside where they can air dry naturally, or at least in a large room with lots of airflow. They’ll dry quicker and smell so much fresher.”

Lastly, she advised people to “ensure you’re draining your mop correctly” to avoid “watermarks and musty smells” on your floors.

TikTok users were left gobsmacked by the video as they realised their own errors. One user exclaimed: “The wet dusting!! I keep seeing people recommending it but it just smears the dust all over and you have to go over and over it to get it off.”

Another chimed in: “Air/ sun-dried bed sheets are the best thing ever,” while a third shared: “The first one: yes, finally some validation.”

However, not everyone was on board with the dusting advice, as some viewers defended their methods in the comments section. A viewer argued: “Damp dusting all the way. I have a sponge thing that catches and lifts the dust then quickly buff with a class cloth.”

Another retorted: “I dust with a cloth with washing up liquid then a tea towel to dry. I am asthmatic and couldn’t cope with dry dusting.”

Meanwhile, another penned: ” Drying clothes outside is gross. It puts dirt & pollen onto the clothes.”
