Take, for example, one Reddit forum contributor who recalled the weirdest Christmas gift she got. “A thong… that was weirdly in my size. Got it from my father-in-law’s girlfriend.” Astonished, even her husband said it was “weird as hell” – and the poor woman is “still bothered by it to this day”.
In some cases, it’s not necessarily who has given you the present that makes it a bit strange, but the age you were when you received it. “My aunt gave me a tyre pressure gauge for a car; I was seven years old,” another Reddit commentator posted.
Another replied: “My aunt gave me a floral mug with a 99p price sticker on it. Just what every nine-year-old boy wants for Christmas.”
Somebody else posted: “My aunt gave me a toy meant for [children]. I was 27 and had just bought my first house.”
Then there are some gifts that have no thought behind them at all – or brazenly highlighting how little you know someone in your family.
One person received a “packed of chocolate nuts from Aldi”, but they’re allergic to nuts.
Then there’s simply weird gifts that most people wouldn’t appreciate – no matter who it’s from or how old you are.
“My friend’s ex-girlfriend from Colombia gave me a plastic bag of elephant dung,” the Reddit poster stated.
“I always remind him that his ex gave me elephant [poop] for Christmas.”
While this is the season of giving, some gifts are truly best left on the shelf.
