Winding through the breathtaking landscapes of Dartmoor National Park, the Hunter’s and Fisherman’s Path to Castle Drogo has been recognized as one of the UK’s top scenic hiking routes. According to a recent survey of The Best UK Hikes, this one ranked third with an impressive score of 9.28/10.
This picturesque 7.1km circular trail is a paradise for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Described as a route that “offers the perfect balance of accessibility, culture and indulgence”, this scenic walk is suitable for intermediate walkers and is perfect for the growing trend of ‘soft adventuring’ – a less hardcore way to see the countyside. With a stellar 4.8/5 review rating on AllTrails and plenty to see along the way, it’s easy to see why this route stands out.
The trail follows the serene banks of the River Teign, offering hikers an opportunity to spot birds and enjoy the tranquil fishing spots along the way. Given it’s position, it’s not hard to find incredible views at every turn.
Just one of the highlights along the way is the iconic Fingle Bridge – a 17th century stone arch bridge where adventurers can pause for refreshments at a historic riverside pub before continuing their trek.
Providing sustenance for the journey, the Fingle Bridge Inn has a stone hearth, wood ceiling beams and a beer garden. It also serves us traditional cream teas with stunning views on the side.
The shaded trail takes walkers through the woodland Teign Gorge in Dartmoor National Park. It takes in the Hunter’s Path that runs from Hunter’s Tor in the west and along to Fisherman’s Path.
The ultimate reward awaits at the end of the walk. Castle Drogo, a striking 20th-century fortress perched high above the landscape, is a sight to behold.
Designed by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, it was built between 1911 and 1930 and is often considered the last castle ever built in England. Despite its medieval-inspired design, it was constructed using modern materials like reinforced concrete.
Now owned by the National Trust, Castle Drogo has undergone extensive restoration due to issues with water penetration. It is open to the public and offers beautiful views over the Teign Gorge, with surrounding gardens and walking trails.
While the trail presents a moderate challenge with some serious inclines, its combination of riverside beauty and historical intrigue makes it worth the walk.
Hikers who have already taken to the trail have left many glowing reviewson the Alltrails website. One said: “Amazing loop track with insane views for miles, ancient woodland and even a castle and pub to visit.”
A second adding: “Easy trail that I did anticlockwise with some steep climbs, especially after the Fringle Bridge Inn. Beautiful views and sounds along the way.”
A third agreed, saying: “Absolutely stunning! Perfect for a nice long dog walk. Not hard at all but still just right amount of uphill! Will be definitely coming back!”
Whether seeking an immersive outdoor experience or a glimpse into England’s rich history, this scenic route delivers an unforgettable journey through one of Dartmoor’s most stunning settings.
