Potatoes storage tip with common food staple to keep them from sprouting

Although it’s normally advised not to store vegetables and fruits together because gases emitted from some fresh produce can cause others to go mouldy more quickly, this isn’t always the case.

One food storage tip to keep potatoes fresher for longer involves pairing spuds with another kitchen staple.

While apples and potatoes might not be the most obvious culinary pairing, they go great together in storage.

This is because Apples naturally produce a gas called ethylene over time.

While ethylene normally causes other fresh produce such as onions and peaches to ripen more quickly, this isn’t the case with potatoes.

In addition, ventilation prevents moisture from building up and keeps your potatoes fresh for much longer.

Potatoes should be kept in a paper bag if kept in a bag at all and never plastic to reduce moisture, according to experts.

Keeping an apple with other root vegetables, however, is not recommended. Ethylene gas can cause both garlic and onions to ripen and spoil more quickly, meaning they need different methods of storage.
