Keep butter fresh for longer with easy storage method ‘Never had an issue’

Sometimes bulk buying saves you more money in the long run but it can be hard to know if you’re going to use the food before its expiry date.

Well, one person has taken to the online forum site Reddit to ask for advice on storing butter and how to preserve it for as long as possible.

In a thread titled: ‘How do you store butter?’ The user started the post: “I have bought a butter pack with 4 packs of butter. I just simply put all of them in the fridge. Is it the right thing to do?

“Also how long can butter store in the bridge? I don’t see there is an expiry date on the box.

“Thanks a lot, everyone.”

People took to the thread to share their advice on the best storage method with one person writing: “Some people leave it out on the table/counter and just covered to protect from bugs. I’m not one of those people.

“I buy the big blocks from Costco in a four-pack. Three go in the freezer until the one in the fridge has about 1/4 left and I move it to the fridge to thaw.”

A second commented: “I have one stick in a sealed container on the counter and then I usually have a couple of sticks in the fridge. Anything beyond that goes in the freezer.”

Another added: “When butter is on sale I store some in the freezer. I put it in a freezer bag and keep it in the cardboard container it comes in. When I need more I move the cardboard container with butter inside to the fridge.

“Have never had an issue with butter going bad in the fridge. I even usually have more than one type as well.”

A user said: “Butter stays good in the fridge for a few months if kept around 4° (not in the door or a warm shelf). If you want butter to be spreadable, keep one stick in a bowl in a cabinet.”

A fifth said: “I keep one stick (1/2 cup) in a glass butter dish on the counter. In the breadbox, actually, so the cats won’t be tempted to try for it. I expect to use that in less than two weeks, and I’ve never had it go rancid.

“I keep the amount I expect to use in four to six weeks in the refrigerator (cheese drawer). If I have more than that, I’ll freeze the rest.

“Consider putting a bit of plastic wrap around the butter in the freezer. Butter keeps a very long time, but it does tend to pick up a sort of stale flavour from the foods around it.”

Finally, another simply said: “I honestly freeze butter until I need it.”
