The latest film featuring Cillian Murphy is now gracing cinema screens, with initial reactions surfacing online.
Steve, which sees the Peaky Blinders star taking centre stage, is currently being shown in cinemas.
However, it’s anticipated to land on Netflix in the near future.
Viewers will be keen to know exactly when that will be. It’s not the only title released this year following a similar release pattern.
House of Dynamite, directed by Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow, and Ballad of a Small Play, featuring Colin Farrell, are also having a brief stint in cinemas before making their debut on the streaming behemoth’s platform.
What’s Steve all about?
Set in the mid-1990s, Steve is a fresh take on Max Porter’s bestseller Shy. The film chronicles a crucial day in the life of headmaster Steve, portrayed by Cillian Murphy, and his pupils at a last-resort reform school, reports the Mirror.
As Steve battles to safeguard the school’s reputation and stave off closure, we see him wrestling with his own mental health issues. Alongside Steve’s struggles, we encounter Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teenager torn between his past and an uncertain future as he tries to balance his inner vulnerability with his tendency towards self-destruction and violence.
When will Steve be available on Netflix?
Steve is currently showing in cinemas for those who can’t wait. But the good news is, it won’t be long before it’s available for streaming.
The film will be available on Netflix from 3 October. Like most new releases on the platform, it is expected to be available from 8am on that day.
What’s the verdict on Steve?
Several major outlets have already published their reviews for the film, with opinions appearing to be somewhat mixed.
Cillian Murphy’s performance has received a lot of praise, although the film currently holds a rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of his lower-rated projects.
One reviewer commented: “There’s a manic energy to every shaky-cam scene that, by the end, seems to be hiding something. Murphy, however, is mesmerising.”
Another critic went as far as to say that no other actor could have done justice to the role, stating: “Steve is a film that would not work at all with a lesser actor than Cillian Murphy at its centre. He grips your attention and demands empathy.”
However, one reviewer felt that the themes and ideas explored in the film didn’t quite hit the mark.
They wrote: “Not to doubt the sincerity of anyone behind or in front of the camera on Steve, but it is clunky in execution. It either needs to stick to its title and focus on Steve or the youth; the film tries to do both, ending up cutting everyone short.”
