A vet has revealed the three phrases some pet owners are guilty of saying that “give him anxiety.”
Taking on the responsibility of a pet is no small feat. It demands unwavering commitment and care to ensure their health, emotions, and overall well-being are properly looked after.
The decision to bring a dog, cat, or any other animal into your life should not be made lightly. Prospective pet owners must carefully weigh up how a furry friend will impact their lives and if they can truly commit to providing the necessary attention required throughout the pet’s lifetime.
One concerned vet has taken to social media to express his alarm at certain comments he frequently encounters in the clinic. Dr Hunter Finn shared his reactions in a popular TikTok video, overlaying the footage with the troubling statements that cause him distress written out
“My pet doesn’t go outside, so we don’t need heartworm prevention”
This first statement addresses a common misconception about heartworm prevention among some pet owners.
Heartworm is a grave and sometimes deadly condition affecting dogs, cats, ferrets, and other animals. The disease is caused by parasitic worms infesting the hearts of these creatures.
These parasitic roundworms are spread through mosquito bites, and while dogs are the primary victims, other animals such as foxes, bears, seals, and more can also suffer from the infestation. Although extremely rare, there have been instances where humans have contracted heartworms, too.
Heartworm is not native to the UK, but dogs that have travelled abroad or been imported from high-risk countries can become infected and spread the disease.
“It’s just a pet, I can buy 10 more for the cost of that treatment”
Many expressed disgust at this shocking phrase. One outraged TikTok user said: “That second one got me stunned. Like do you even like your pet?” Another commented: “anyone who says the 2nd one deserves a kick in a**.”
A third user shared: “No lie the second one boils my skin”. Someone else added: “Some people are just awful. I have no idea how you deal with it”.
Veterinary bills can be extremely costly, especially for emergency care or surgery. Getting an animal is a commitment to caring for them, including covering medical expenses.
Insurance and pet plans can be a lifeline for pets and owners. Amid the cost of living crisis, it’s essential to consider the associated costs of owning an animal and whether it’s realistic for you to manage.
“My old vet would just give me antibiotics any time I asked”
Though a common prescription doled out, antibiotics are not a cure-all. They’re designed to combat bacterial infections, not all illnesses.
If your dog, or another pet, is diagnosed with a parasite or virus, then antibiotics won’t be prescribed by your vet as they would be ineffective.
However, if your pet has a bacterial infection, then antibiotics will be the appropriate treatment.
If you have any concerns about your pet, it’s important to seek professional help for a personal assessment and tailored diagnosis.
