In the world of pets, dogs are often called ‘man’s best friend,’ but not every breed is right for every owner. And it is crucial to choose a dog that is best suited for your lifestyle. With hundreds of dog breeds out there, choosing your future furry friend can be challenging.
While some breeds thrive with children, others tend to be more temperamental, while some need constant exercise and mental stimulation. Veterinarian Mark dos Anjos, DVM, has over 40 years of experience working in Africa, Europe, the US, and South America, and has shared on PetHelpful the five dog breeds he would never own.
Dr Mark wrote: “This actually started out as a joke, but there really are dog breeds out there I would not want to own. Some of them are favourite breeds (at least for some people), but I would not want one myself, even though I enjoy the happiness that a canine can provide.”
Whether you agree or disagree with his opinion, his list is a reminder that choosing a dog is about matching personalities and lifestyles, not just looks or popularity.

Pugs are undeniably charming, with their large, round eyes and squashed faces. The vet even calls them “too cute.”
In his opinion, “these dogs look too much like human babies.”
Pugs are also in a breed group classed as ‘Category Three’ by The Kennel Club, the highest category of health concerns due to the way they look. According to the PDSA, breeding these dogs over several years for them to look a certain way means they are “very likely” to suffer from “serious health and welfare issues”. This means they are likely to suffer from severe breathing difficulties, eye problems and skin problems.
