There are plenty of life hacks on the internet, but not all of them should be taken at face value.

A new trend on social media has left many scratching their heads and raised alarms among experts.

People have been washing their fruits and vegetables in the dishwasher but experts say this might not be the best idea.

The hack gained traction on TikTok, with various users showcasing their unconventional method of cleaning fresh produce.

One viral video by user @larad_official featured her mother loading an array of fruits and vegetables into the dishwasher, claiming that using vinegar in the cycle enhances cleanliness.

“I feel more secure knowing they’re clean since so many people handle them,” the mother stated.

However, this so-called hack has drawn significant criticism from health experts.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings against the practice, warning that it is fundamentally unsafe.

An FDA spokesperson said: “The FDA only recommends washing produce thoroughly under running water.”

The primary concern lies in the potential for chemical contaminants.

Detergents and rinse aids used in dishwashers can leave harmful residues in the natural crevices of fruits and vegetables, posing health risks if ingested.

Experts strongly advise consumers to forgo the dishwasher method and instead wash produce under cold running water.

For firmer vegetables, using a clean brush can further ensure they are properly cleaned.

As this dishwasher hack continues to circulate on social media, it serves as a reminder that not all online trends are beneficial. Consumers are urged to prioritise safe food handling practices over viral fads.
