This 2000 American horror film has been dubbed as one of the most ‘underrated’ in the series, and it’s streaming live on TV tonight, just in time for Halloween.
You may have watched the original Scream movie, but if you haven’t caught the third entry in the franchise, Scream 3, then tonight’s your chance.
Helmed by Wes Craven, this early 2000s gem boasts a brilliant ensemble cast packed with recognisable stars, portrayed in a completely fresh perspective.
Featuring Hollywood heavyweights including David Arquette, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and Parker Posey, amongst others, it’s fair to say the line-up is absolutely stellar.
Following the triumph of the original picture, released in 1997, this sequel has received considerably less recognition for its spine-chilling moments and captivating storyline, reports the Mirror.
A Rotten Tomatoes review says: “Though it leans heavier on comedy and Hollywood satire than genuine scares, Scream 3 wraps up the original trilogy with enough wit, tension, and self-referential fun to keep fans satisfied.”
Meanwhile, another viewer said: “A very clever story with amusing characters, especially Jennifer Jolie (Parker Posey).”
The plot centres around Sidney Prescott, portrayed by Campbell, as she retreats into seclusion after the incidents from the previous two films.
However, she becomes entangled with Hollywood when a fresh Ghostface starts murdering the actors from a movie within the fictional production. Compared to earlier instalments, Scream 3 ramps up the laughs whilst toning down the bloodshed and scares.
This shift is believed to stem from public backlash against violent content following the devastating Columbine High School tragedy.
One review says: “Scream 3 is an uneven but still entertaining entry in the series. While it loses some of the original’s sharpness, it offers fun moments and delivers enough thrills to keep most fans engaged.”
Meanwhile, one viewer branded the film “underrated”, with numerous supporters arguing it’s also “overhated” given its lesser success compared to earlier entries. They wrote: “Such an overhated Scream movie, one of my favourites from the franchise.”
Nevertheless, like countless horror flicks, it’s faced its share of harsh reviews, as anticipated for a sequel following two triumphant releases. One review says: “Scream 3 unfortunately fails ultimately because of the plot point-by-plot point resemblance to the original and second film, with too many comical twists and dialogue that is absurd.
“There are a few good moments here and there and a fairly decent later third act but ultimately not as engaging or innovative as the original.”
