Many people find it challenging to name their pets.
If you’ve just got a new puppy or kitten, it’s crucial for many to find a name that truly fits their new furry companion.
However, finding something unique or a name that resonates with you can often be difficult. Those who are struggling might want to pay attention as the latest data from Pets at Home‘s VIP Puppy and Kitten Club has unveiled the top puppy and kitten names from last year. This could provide the inspiration needed to find the perfect name for your pet.
The research discovered a continued fascination with pet names influenced by pop culture and entertainment. Luna was the top name for both cats and dogs last year, believed to have gained popularity from the Harry Potter character Luna Lovegood. It retained the top spot for its fifth consecutive year.
Second for cats was Milo – a German name meaning ‘soldier’ or ‘merciful’, followed by Bella, which translates to ‘beautiful’ in Italian.
Simba was fourth for kittens, thought to have gained popularity from the Disney film ‘The Lion King’ and is of Swahili origin, meaning ‘lion’. Meanwhile, Coco was fifth – another Disney-inspired name from the Day of the Dead film Coco. This name is also a shortened version of the name Socorro.
Completing the top 10 for kittens were Nala, Willow, Oreo, Loki and Daisy.
According to the data, Bella secured the second spot for puppies, followed closely by Teddy and Milo, with Poppy coming in at number five. Other popular names included Lola, Daisy, Coco, Buddy, and Willow.
In contrast, Sabrina didn’t quite top the charts, but its popularity did see a significant increase in new cat registrations, likely due to Sabrina Carpenter’s chart-topping hits in 2024. The name Bluey, inspired by the hit children’s show, remains a top choice for pets, while Taylor has also gained popularity, influenced by the global success of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.
Dr. Samantha Butler-Davies MRCVS, Veterinary Services Director at Pets at Home, advises: “When choosing a name for your pet, aim for something short, clear, and easy to say. One- or two-syllable names are ideal, as they are easier for pets to recognise and respond to.”
She adds:”Avoid names that sound too similar to training commands or other names in the household to prevent confusion. Consider your pet’s personality, appearance, or unique traits to find a name that feels fitting. Most importantly, choose a name you enjoy saying-you’ll be using it often!”
The data follows a revelation by an American TikToker that the US had a different top 10 list for male dog names last year. According to @utahdoodles, Max was the most popular name for male dogs, followed by Charlie, Cooper, Milo, Buddy, Rocky, Finn, Leo, Teddy and Oliver.
