Thunderbolts has just arrived on Disney Plus, having initially premiered in cinemas in May 2025.
This marks the final film of Phase Five of the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), with the Thunderbolts team rebranded as the “New Avengers”.
The film, boasting big names like Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan, features an amnesiac man named Bob (Lewis Pullman) who is released from a suspended animation pod.
The team first encounters Bob in an underground bunker they’ve been lured to, and initially, he doesn’t seem to pose a threat.
However, his sinister past soon comes to light, revealing that he was injected with the same serum that gave Captain America his powers.
Consequently, his superhero alter ego is known as The Sentry, but he also possesses a villainous persona known as the Void.
Bob grapples with mental health issues and addiction, which were challenging subjects for actor Pullman to tackle.
He confided to Radio Times: “It’s a hard topic, because you want to pay respect to the right terms that should be used when you’re talking about stuff like this.
“But also, at the same time, you don’t want to be scared of talking about it, scared of saying the wrong thing.”
Regarding his comic book origin, Robert ‘Bob’ Reynolds is an addict who stumbles upon an experimental version of the super soldier serum after breaking into a secret lab.
In the comic, Bob ingests a vial hoping for an exhilarating high, but instead morphs into The Sentry, possessing “the power of a million exploding suns”.
The serum, however, disrupts Bob’s mental equilibrium, leading him to create a menacing alter ego named The Void.
Co-creator Paul Jenkins explains in one issue that every positive action taken by The Sentry is counterbalanced by a negative action from The Void.
While The Sentry’s might can be likened to DC’s Superman, The Void revels in wreaking havoc and death.
