If you have visitors coming into your home, especially if they’re bringing over children, you will need to be alert to the risk of territorial aggression. It’s very common for dog owners to feel as though their pet wouldn’t hurt anybody, but accidents do happen.
Should youngsters goad a dog, there could be plenty of warning signs before they snap. Speaking on this subject to Express.co.uk is veterinarian Dave Martin, who is the Group Director of Animal Welfare at IVC Evidensia. “Any dog has the potential for unwanted behaviours such as being overprotective or aggressive to other people,” Mr Martin cautioned.
“Teaching children to be kind to and understand dog body language from an early age is also important,” he added.
“As is ensuring dogs have their own safe space – like a bed or a crate – where they can retreat and be left alone if needed.”
Mr Martin emphasizes that “it’s important for owners to recognise early signs of subtle aggression” in their pet pooches.
Examples of subtle aggression can include “stiffened posture, lip licking, or intense staring”. These “often come before growling or snapping”, but there are certain steps you must take if this occurs.
Mr Martin explained: “If a dog snarls at a child, the safest step is to calmly separate them immediately and avoid punishment, which can escalate fear and aggression.
“The dog should not be left alone with the child, and expert advice should be sought promptly to identify triggers behind the aggression.”
He continued: “Developing a safe, effective plan to de-escalate the behaviour and prevent future incidents is essential.”
Mr Martin stated: “If this behaviour arises, it’s important to seek guidance from a vet or qualified trainer to understand the root cause and explore the right support.”
