One movie has been crowned the “cheesiest” Christmas movie, but fans have described it as the “rom-com of the century”. The Holiday is officially the cheesiest film you can watch this Christmas, according to movie lovers worldwide.
Researchers at Buzz Bingo gathered data from the top Christmas films list on IMDb and discovered that The Holiday was the cheesiest film. The feel-good romantic comedy set in the Surrey countryside took the crown as 17% of the film’s reviews mention ‘cheesy’, ‘cringe’ and ‘predictable’. Cosy movie nights often set the tone for the festive season. Brits settle down with their loved ones (earlier in the year than they’d care to admit) to watch films they’ve seen a hundred times before to start feeling Christmassy. Any of these top-rated films would be cheesy enough to get you in the mood for wholesome festivities.
The Holiday (2006) is the cheesiest film you can watch this Christmas, according to reviewers, as 17% of reviews refer to how cheesy The Holiday is. Written and directed by Nancy Meyers, the film follows two intertwined love stories in different corners of the world, combining festive themes with cheesy romance.
One user on Rotten Tomatoes described it as the “rom-com of the century”.
The film’s synopsis reads: “Two women, one from America and one from Britain, swap homes at Christmastime after bad breakups with their boyfriends. Each woman finds romance with a local man but realizes that the imminent return home may end the relationship.”
Happiest Season (2020), directed by Clea DuVall, is a corny holiday rom-com, and Miracle on 34th Street (1947) is a Christmas classic starring Maureen O’Hara. Both finished second and third, respectively, as 14% and 12% of their reviews are ‘cheesy’.
Interestingly, although The Holiday was the corniest film in the study, it still scored well on the Tomatometer at 51% and scored 7/10 on IMDB ratings. This suggests that cheesy isn’t always meant as a criticism, and The Holiday will get you in the mood for Christmas.
Trading Places (1983) is the best-rated film in the top 10 cheesiest movies. It scored the highest on the Tomatometer (87%) and has the second-highest IMDB rating (7.5). It may not be the first film that comes to mind when you think Christmas movie, but it is set in the festive season and will definitely laugh you into the Christmas spirit.
