
An urgent product recall notice has been issued for a children’s arts and crafts product, after testing revealed the sand in the kit may be contaminated with asbestos. The product, created by Addo Play Limited, was found to have not met health and safety requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.
The Out To Impress Creative Candles from Addo Play Ltd may contain trace levels of asbestos. Customers and users who’ve purchased the product are being urged to stop using it immediately, keep it out of the reach of children and wear gloves and a mask when handling. Asbestos can pose a health risk even with low levels of exposure.
The products have been withdrawn from shelves and recalled by the manufacturer from those who’ve purchased the product. The product was sold by The Entertainer and Early Learning Centre, Tesco, Matalan, M&S, Hobbycraft, Moonpig, British Garden Centres, and TG Jones between September 2024 and February 2026.
The Office for Product Safety Standards’ hazard statement read: “The product presents a risk to health as the sand may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure.
“The product does not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.”
According to the OPSS, the affected product can be identified by the item code of 318-19180-B. These are the specific product numbers from the retailers the kit was sold at:
- Entertainer/Early Learning Centre Product Number: 570142
- Hobbycraft Product Number: 6859261000
- M&S Specific Product Code: T554448

Customers have also been provided with disposal instructions, to ensure that the product is dealt with safely. These include:
- Stop using the product immediately.
- If the sand is still in its packaging, place in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly and store in a secure location out of the reach of children.
- If the sand has been used, clean up sites where the product was used using wet cloths to avoid generating dust. Wear gloves and a mask. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask and cloths.
- Keep children and other people away from areas where the sand has been used until the area has been cleaned.
- Dispose of the product in your general household waste, or return to store where specified by the retailer, who will provide a full refund.
