If your someone who prefers to dry socks on radiators rather than putting them in the tumble dryer, one home expert claims doing so may be doing more harm than good to your electricity bill.
Self-professed ‘Queen of Clean’, Lynsey Crombie who regularly appears on ITV shows, This Morning and Good Morning Britain has a “hack” she believes is quick and easy to implement, and more importantly will save you money.
“Grab a coat hanger and a handful of pegs, clip your socks on and hang them up perfect for drying indoors and outdoors,” she urged in a TikTok video. “[It’s] simple, effective, and super cheap!”
Lynsey’s illustrated the process in her brief clip, which closed with her hanging four pairs of socks per coat hanger from the upper frame of her shower.
An expert from Which?, meanwhile strongly advises against using radiator heat to dry any clothes. He explained in a video: “Radiators circulate warm air around the room, so if the heating is on at set to 20 degrees Celcius, your radiators will pump out heat until the room reaches that temperature at which point, the boiler will stop.”
So what’s the problem? Cold and wet clothes act as a “barrier” to the heat, the expert said. As such, you could find yourself heating your room for a lot longer than is necessary.
“While you might end up with dry clothes, you’ll also end up with a colder home and bigger energy bills – and maybe even mould,” the expert warned. But is there a suitable alternative?
“Place your clothes on an airer near the radiator – it might take longer, but it helps the air to circulate around the room,” the Which? expert instructed.
Additionally, if you want to speed this process up, he suggested purchasing an electric heated airer. “They do work better on smaller loads though,” he closed his clip. “Or use a tumble dryer.”
Meanwhile, Lynsey has another simple hack that can wipe away grease without barely any effort at all. The ITV star urged her followers to not overlook salt as a cleaning method.
She said: “Did you know salt isn’t just for cooking? It’s actually an amazing natural cleaner! Salt absorbs grease and liquid, lifts stubborn stains (even red wine), and is mildly antibacterial — making it perfect for soaking kitchen sponges or scrubbing chopping boards.”
In her hack video, Lynsey simply poured a generous amount of table salt down her kitchen sink, followed by boiling water straight from her kettle. She said salt is “brilliant” at absorbing liquids and grease.
The cleaning guru added: “Simple, eco-friendly, and already in your cupboard — what’s not to love?” Many of Lynsey’s followers were impressed with the hack as one said: “Love cleaning with this salt, only have this one in the home for cleaning.”
