There’s no denying that prices for pretty much everything have risen in recent years, so much so that one woman has claimed it’s now a “privilege” to cook in your own home.
Farah Shams said it was an “absolute joke” that eating out for meals used to be considered a privilege, but now making a lamb curry at home is.
“I want to make a lamb curry, so let’s see how much it will cost,” the TikToker said in a recent video from her local Tesco.
“I need to understand why it’s £7 for some lamb leg,” she seethed, showing the shelf – but it got worse. “So you’re telling me it’s £10 for some oil? And Clubcard want to make us think we’re getting a bargain? £6 for some oil?”
And it did not stop there, as she spotted that the Tesco brand oil was priced at £8.40.
“I haven’t left this section because it keeps getting worse and worse,” she said, then pointing to a £12.90 price tag. “I didn’t even need to move to show you that it gets worse.”
When she was at the checkout, she said that it cost her £20 to get “some lamb leg and shoulder”, adding: “And that’s what I’m talking about when I say it’s a luxury to cook food at home. Because I already have half of the ingredients I need at home, so you’re telling me that if I didn’t have any of the ingredients, it would’ve cost me £60 to make a lamb curry?”
Commenters online expressed their astonishment at the soaring cost of everyday food items. One user vented: “Beef stew and dumplings used to be a cheap meal for a family of four. Now you need to remortgage your house.”
They added: “I spent £16 on eight tiny lamb chops a little while back. I’ve decided to shop at our local butchers and farm shop more as it’s almost the same price but better quality.”
Another said: “It’s now cheaper to get it made from takeaway/restaurant than cooking it yourself.”
Tesco has been approached for comment.
