Netflix viewers are reacquainting themselves with a war film featuring a star from SAS Rogue Heroes, which is based on an ‘extraordinary’ true story and dubbed a ‘masterpiece’,
Unbroken first hit screens in 2014, drawing inspiration from the biography of Louis Zamperini, the US Olympic track record holder.
it recounts his real-life experiences during the Second World War and the film is currently enjoying renewed popularity on the streaming platform.
Zamperini survived a plane crash, only to be left at the mercy of the elements and later endure harsh treatment as a prisoner of war.
The film was directed by Angelina Jolie, with a screenplay co-authored by the Coen brothers. Jack O’Connell, known for his roles in the Steven Knight-created BBC series SAS Rogue Heroes, as well as films Sinners and 28 Years Later, takes the lead role as Zamperini.
Fans of the historical war series are urged to watch Unbroken now that it’s garnering a fresh audience on Netflix. Both are lauded for their portrayal of real-life events during wartime , reports the Mirror.
Domnhall Gleeson stars alongside O’Connell in Unbroken as another survivor of the plane crash. The actor reportedly lost so much weight for the role that his eyeballs shrunk.
While critics gave the film a tepid reception, with a rating of just 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, it is remembered more warmly by fans. At the time of writing, it is currently one of the most viewed films on Netflix, ranking tenth in the top 10 among UK users.
The film has already garnered rave reviews online, with one viewer hailing it as: “One of the best movies of this century.”
