An expert has warned Express.co.uk readers that failing to pay attention to a specific symbol on makeup packaging can result in more than just a faded look – it could lead to skin irritation or even infections.
Understanding all the symbols and adhering to expiry dates is essential for your health and beauty routine.
Grigorii Ushkov, Director and Makeup Artist at Crush Beauty Salon, stresses the importance of checking the Period After Opening (PAO) symbol on makeup packages.
“Makeup does expire, and using old products can do more harm than good. Whether it’s foundation, mascara, or lipstick, every beauty product has a shelf life,” he explained in an exclusive interview.
“Over time, makeup can collect bacteria, mould, and yeast, which can lead to breakouts, irritation, and even infections.”
While your foundation or lipstick may look and smell fine, the ingredients inside degrade over time, which can affect both their performance and safety.
For products like mascara and eyeliner, the risk is particularly high due to how sensitive the area is.
“Mascara and liquid eyeliner should be replaced every three to six months since they’re prone to bacteria buildup,” Grigorii advised.
Similarly, liquid foundations, concealers, and cream products generally have a shelf life of six to 12 months. If they start to feel or look different, it’s time to replace them.
When it comes to powders, eyeshadows, and blushes, these products have a longer shelf life, typically up to two years, provided they are stored correctly.
However, if any product starts to smell odd, change texture, or look streaky, it’s no longer safe to use.
“Using expired makeup isn’t just ineffective, it can actually be risky. As bacteria build up over time, your chances of breakouts, irritation, and infections go up, especially with eye and lip products,” Grigorii added.
Using expired makeup can lead to more than just an uneven application as you might notice your skin becoming “irritated or breaking out, especially with expired products used near the eyes or lips,” Grigorii explained.
“Plus, as preservatives break down, the product becomes more vulnerable to contamination.”
To keep your beauty routine safe and effective, it’s vital to regularly refresh your makeup stash and follow expiration guidelines.
“If you want to keep your skin healthy and your makeup looking fresh, it’s best to follow expiration guidelines and refresh your beauty stash regularly,” the expert concluded.
