Over two decades on from The Passion of the Christ and Mel Gibson is back to helm the long-awaited sequel.

The Hollywood star has been planning on directing The Resurrection of the Christ for years, with Jim Caviezel reprising Jesus.

Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace has been working on a script Gibson describes as a “crazy acid trip”, that only depicts Christ out of the Empty Tomb but plenty of action in the spiritual realms.

The upcoming epic’s narrative will stretch all the way from Satan’s rebellion at the Fall in Genesis to the death of the Apostle John, who wrote the Book of Revelation.

The film is also expected to cover the Harrowing of Hell when Christ descends into Hades to “preach to the spirits in prison” (1 Peter 3:19).

Gibson had hoped to start shooting next year, but the latest news is that filming will begin this summer. According to Variety, The Resurrection of the Christ will be filmed at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios this August. The Passion of the Christ was also based here, and the sequel will be shot in Matera, where the opening sequence of the James Bond movie No Time To Die was filmed.

Alongside a digitally de-aged Caviezel, Maia Morgenstern and Francesco De Vito are expected to reprise Mary and Peter, respectively. Upon its release, The Passion of the Christ became the highest-grossing independent film of all time, raking in $612 million worldwide. Given that The Resurrection of the Christ films this summer, presumably it will hit cinemas in time for Easter 2027.
