Christmas jumpers

We’ve picked a range of festive Christmas knits to suit all budgets (Image: M&S / Next )

Christmas jumper season is officially here, and whether you’re after something quirky and fun, a classic knit, or a chic, glamorous option to see you through the festivities, there’s plenty to choose from right now. And since we’re already into December, demand is only going to surge, so it’s a great time to get ahead of the crowds and pick yours up early.

Of course, prices vary, and you probably don’t want to splurge on a jumper that gets worn once on Christmas Jumper Day (which falls on December 11 this year) before spending the rest of the year tucked away at the back of your wardrobe. On the other hand, you might be looking to invest in a timeless seasonal knit – something versatile enough to layer over your office outfits for a subtle touch of festive cheer, yet still lovely to wear on December 25 itself.

We’ve rounded up a few modern takes on seasonal sweaters from the likes of Marks & Spencer and Next, plus a glitzy, fun jumper from Roman that won’t break the bank and a simpler, versatile Christmas knit from Brora that gives just the right amount of festive spirit, without making you look like one of Santa’s Little Helpers. Marks & Spencer Embellished Slogan Crew Neck Jumpers – from £26

The marks and spencer jumpers

If you’re after a jumper that’s casual enough for day-to-day wear throughout Advent – festive without being full-on garish, Marks & Spencer has a lovely range of crew-neck jumpers with cheerful slogans on the front. One of the most affordable is a red crew neck emblazoned with “Merry & Bright” in silver sequins, retailing at £26.

It’s the perfect amount of sparkle without going overboard, and honestly, is there anything more Christmassy than a Santa-red knit? It’s made from a lightweight yarn blend (51% polyester, 41% acrylic, and 5% wool), so it’s cosy but still breathable.

The jumper is available in sizes extra small to large, and customers have given it a five-star rating. One shopper summed it up nicely: “It’s a great versatile piece and will be great for the festive period.”

If red isn’t quite your thing, there’s also a grey option, this time embellished with the word “jingle” in candy-cane-style sequins. It’s made from a slightly thicker yarn (57% acrylic, 32% polyester, and 8% wool), and at £30, it’s just a bit pricier.

This crew neck has also earned a five-star review, with one customer saying: “Really lovely. Feels quality and is the nice mid-point between classy and Christmas naff!”

However, M&S recommends washing these jumpers on a delicate cycle and avoiding bleach to keep them looking their best.

Next Red Fairisle Pattern Matching Family Christmas Jumpers – from £36 (adults) £18 (kids)

Family wearing matching Next Christmas jumpers

These Christmas jumpers from next comes in a variety of sizes for the whole family (Image: Next )

Can you get any more festive than matching family jumpers? If you want something the whole gang can get involved in on the big day, this Red Fairisle Pattern Matching Family Christmas Jumper absolutely screams Christmas and looks like it’s been lifted straight from a greetings card. The jumper features a festive scene of a red car carrying a tree, along with a cream and navy fair isle pattern, all set against a seasonally-appropriate red backdrop.

The jumper comes in men’s, women’s, and kids, with sizes ranging from extra small to extra large in women, up to 3XL in men, and from three to six months up to 15 to 16 years for kids (though it’s worth noting some teenage sizes have already sold out). The women’s jumper also comes in a petite option.

Prices vary depending on the size, but the jumpers range from £18 for kids (baby sizes are cheapest), £36 for men and £38 for women.

The cut of the jumpers also differs. While the women’s jumper has a high neck, the men’s and children’s versions both have a crew neck.

Perhaps the main downside is that these jumpers aren’t 100% wool (they’re made of 52% recycled polyester, 37% acrylic, 8% wool and 3% elastane), but the upside is that they’re machine washable, so no fear of accidentally shrinking them in the wash.

Brora Alpaca Fair Isle Yoke Jumper – £245

Brora fair isle knit

The Brora jumper is an updated version of one worn by Claudia Winkleman on The Traitors (Image: Instagram / Brora)

If you’re after a cosy knit that feels a little more luxurious, and one you can wear long after the festive season, Brora is a brilliant option for wintery knits. One piece in particular caught our eye a few weeks ago: an updated version of their fair isle knit that became a sell-out after Claudia Winkleman wore it on The Traitors at the start of the year.

Despite its high price tag (a hefty £259, later reduced to £155 in the sale), the jumper sold out, and for a while, it looked like the chance to recreate Claudia’s cool winter look was gone for good. But the good news is Brora has now released a new, updated version of the knit. This time, instead of lambswool, it’s crafted from alpaca wool.

The black jumper has a classic winter Fair Isle pattern around the neck and lower arms (though the band on the arms is slightly thinner than the original). While there are a few small design tweaks, if you loved Claudia’s look, this is a great way to channel it.

And rather than going for those garish festive shades of green and red, this jumper is far more subtle thanks to its monochrome palette. It doesn’t immediately scream Christmas, but it still feels perfectly seasonal.

That said, it is also available in an emerald shade if you prefer a touch of colour.

The jumper comes in sizes 4–6, 8–10, 12–14, and 16–18. It retails for £245, so definitely on the pricey side, but with Brora’s quality and heritage, it’s an investment piece that will see you through many winters.

In a shopper review, one person described it as “lovely”. They added: “Lightweight, warm and beautiful jumper.”

Roman Black Festive Sparkly Bow Knit Jumper – £38

Roman bow jumper

The Roman jumper comes in a choice of colours (Image: Roman)

Roman has loads of Christmas jumpers to choose from, but this sparkly bow jumper was a best-seller last year, so fans will likely be pleased to see it’s back again for another year. Once again, it’s festive enough to say Christmas, but not so seasonal that you won’t be able to wear it beyond December. The jumper is made from a fluffy knit texture (comprising 67% polyamide and 33% acrylic), making it cosy enough for cold days, plus it has a funnel neck.

Of course, it wouldn’t be festive without a touch of sparkle, and in this case, it’s a pretty bow design. The jumper comes in a choice of three colours: black with a red bow, green with a black bow and pink with a black bow. Yes, it’s glitzy, so it could be dressed up with jeans and a pair of heels, but it would work just as well dressed down for a comfy Christmas Day at home.

The jumper has been rated five stars by previous customers, with one saying: “Lovely warm Christmas sweater. I loved wearing this.”

Next Black 3D Holly Chunky Christmas Cardigan – £54

Knitted holly cardigan

This knitted cardigan is a great option if you don’t want a jumper (Image: Next)

Of course, a Christmas jumper doesn’t have to be a jumper at all. You could opt for a festive cardigan like Head of Affiliates Sally Newall, who spotted this cute chunky cardigan adorned with a 3D knitted holly design from Next. She said: “I’ve always found Christmas jumpers are way too hot to wear for long, which is why I am an advocate of the festive cardi.

“I wear mine open, layered over a tee to allow some crucial airflow! I do like to still keep it kitsch, though, which is why this Next number caught my eye. I like the jolly vibe of oversized applique holly, and the balloon sleeves and slouchy cut are more like something I would wear outside of December.”

The cardigan has a knitted appearance though is made from 43% acrylic, 39% recycled polyester, and 18% nylon, and it’s machine washable.
