The Gentleman’s Theo James has been the bookies’ favourite to be the next James Bond for the last couple of weeks.

But now he’s been ousted from the top spot by Daniel Craig’s Casino Royale runner-up, Henry Cavill.

Earlier this month, the Superman star said, “Watch this space” regarding Amazon MGM’s search for the new 007.

And now the 41-year-old’s odds have been slashed from 3-1 to 2-1 in the last 24 hours.

William Hill spokesperson Lee Phelps said: “There’s been a big shift in the market for who’ll replace Daniel Craig as the next Bond, with Henry Cavill making waves in the betting and shortening into favouritism overnight.”

He added: “We’ve cut Cavill’s odds from 3/1 to 2/1 which sees him rise to the top of the betting to become the next 007. We’ve seen him in Bond-esque roles in recent years and the public seem to agree he’d be the ideal candidate to play the world’s most famous secret agent. Contrary to Cavill, who has seen continued support in the market, Theo James’ position as favourite in the betting has been hijacked as he drifts from 15/8 to 5/2 for the role.”

Behind Cavill and James are Aaron Taylor-Johnson on 5-1 and both Harris Dickinson and James Norton on 7-1.
