There’s nothing quite like cosying up on your sofa and putting a juicy Netflix show on, packed full of twists and turns, or drama, or just something comforting that you can easily watch without having to follow a tricky plot line.
However, it can take ages to decide what to actually watch because there are so many options on streaming sites.
Thankfully though, there is a series that stands out from all the rest. Even though it’s been available for a while, telly fans say it’s essential viewing.
Taking to Reddit’s Netflix forum, someone asked: “What’s that one Netflix show you think is an absolute must-watch? The kind where you’d say, ‘I can’t believe you haven’t seen this yet’. Looking for something great to start next, classics or hidden gems, both welcome”.
In the comments, a series many people went crazy for is ‘Mindhunter’, which they said completely gripped them.
Mindhunter is a psychological crime thriller series available on Netflix, created by Joe Penhall and produced by David Fincher and Charlize Theron. The show is set in the late 1970s and early 1980s and is inspired by real events, drawing from the true-crime book “Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit” by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker.
The story follows two FBI agents, Holden Ford and Bill Tench, who work in the Behavioural Science Unit. They are pioneers in criminal profiling, attempting to understand the psychology of serial killers at a time when the concept was still new and controversial. Alongside them is Dr Wendy Carr, a psychologist who helps formalise their research and navigate the academic and bureaucratic challenges they face.
Mindhunter delves deeply into the agents’ interviews with incarcerated murderers, exploring their motivations and the patterns behind their crimes. The conversations are intense and often unsettling, but the series is less about graphic violence and more about the psychological tension and intellectual pursuit of understanding what drives people to commit horrific acts.
The show is meticulously crafted, with a strong emphasis on period-accurate details, from the costumes and set design to the social attitudes of the time.
However, according to fans, this may be the reason why there were no more than two seasons, as it became “very costly due to the time period it was set in”.
Fans are sad about this and wish the programme would make a return. One said: “Brilliant show! One I missed when it ended!”
Meanwhile, a second wrote: “I loved every minute of this show. I’ve watched the whole series three times!”
