Your neighbours can completely make or break your living situation. Even the most perfect house can be ruined by noisy or inconsiderate neighbours, while a small property that isn’t your ideal home can be hard to leave behind if you’ve managed to form strong bonds with the people living next door.
Neighbours don’t necessarily have to be best friends or even communicate that often, but having a mutual understanding that you don’t make too much noise, you always put your wheelie bins out properly, and you don’t allow your plants to overgrow into their garden can go a long way.
One man on Reddit, however, was left baffled when his neighbour put in a complaint about him that could have had him evicted from his rented flat, as he was convinced she had to be lying about him.
The 28-year-old man said he was contacted by his landlord about several “noise complaints” that had been lodged by the woman living in the flat directly above him. However, he insisted that it couldn’t possibly have been him making the racket.
The complaints referenced “late night parties”, and the man works night shifts at a hospital, so he wouldn’t have been home at night to make the noise. What’s more, he insisted he never has parties, and couldn’t understand why the woman would lie.
When he went to confront his neighbour and tell her that she was mistaken, however, she simply accused him again of making too much noise multiple times a week.
He wrote: “My landlord texts me saying there’s been noise complaints about late-night parties from my unit. I was confused as hell because I literally live alone with my cat, and the most exciting thing I do is watch Netflix with subtitles on. I asked who complained, and he said the lady in 3B (directly above me).
“I went up to talk to her and explain that there was some mistake. She opens the door and immediately goes ‘Oh, YOU’RE the party guy.” I tried telling her I work nights and am barely home in the evenings, but she cuts me off, saying she hears music and people talking until 2-3am multiple times a week.”
Baffled as to why the woman would be lying about him and trying to have him evicted, the man decided to do his own research – and discovered it was actually the unit next to hers that was making the noise, not his one below hers.
But even armed with this information, the woman will not apologise for potentially getting the man evicted for no reason.
He added: “Turns out the unit next to HERS (3C) is the one actually having people over, but because the sound travels weird in this old building, she assumed it was coming from below her. I even showed her my work schedule on my phone. She just goes ‘Well, maybe you should talk to your guests about being quieter’ and closed the door in my face.
“I had to get my landlord to actually investigate and confirm it was 3C. She never apologised, by the way. Now she gives me dirty looks in the hallway like I’m the problem.”
Commenters on the post were firmly on the man’s side. Many said it was “ridiculous” that his neighbour would put in a formal complaint without confirming the source of the noise herself, and even more out of line that she wouldn’t apologise for her mistake.
One person said: “Your neighbour can’t stand the fact that you proved her wrong. Maybe she’d better make sure who is actually responsible for what she objects to before making a complaint.”
Another added: “Next time you see her, you should demand an apology from her.”
