When you pick up a Too Good To Go bag, it’s always a surprise what you’ll find inside. For Alex Trueman, who shared her haul from Morrisons on TikTok, she was astounded by the amount of food she received and wasn’t sure how to use it all.

The Too Good To Go app, launched in 2016, allows users to purchase unsold food from local restaurants, takeaways, and supermarkets that would otherwise be wasted, at significantly reduced prices. The initiative gained immense popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic, with supermarkets also participating, enabling customers to buy items close to their expiry date.

Alex paid a mere £3 for her bag, exclaiming: “It’s so heavy, I can’t even weigh it because my kitchen scales says ‘Error’ when I put it on there. I’m going to weigh everything individually and see what it is – my arms are in agony from carrying it home and I had to stop about 10 times.”

So, what did the bag contain? Alex first pulled out a four-pack of cheesy hot cross buns, then three large loose oranges and a bag of spinach. She continued to reveal cherries, a six-pack of bagels, coriander, “an insane amount” of browned bananas and four large loose jacket potatoes. “They’ll last forever, won’t they?” she mused.

Alex couldn’t believe her eyes as she continued to unpack her incredible bargain, exclaiming: “Oh my god, there is so much in here. There’s six more apples in here, a lemon, two chayotes, a garlic and more oranges. What am I to do with all this?” She concluded in amazement: “£3 that all was – that is insane.”

One TikTok user reassured her: “Friendly reminder that used by dates pretty much only exist so you can’t sue if you get sick eating something past that date. It’s generally all fine. You’ll know when it’s gone bad.”

Another follower offered some practical advice: “You can bake a lot of the vegetables and freeze them. Or make juice or jam from the apples, and also freeze them. You can freeze the bagels too. I freeze a lot.”

A third person chimed in with praise for Morrisons too, penning: “I got two bags from Morrisons last summer and got about £60 worth of fresh fruit. Not one bit went off in the time it took to eat.”

Meanwhile, a fourth suggested a unique recipe for the ripe bananas: “Highly recommend making banana (plantain) curry! It’s something my partner makes it has apples in too and it’s delicious! The bread will freeze and potatoes will keep.”

And a fifth gave Alex a tasty tip: “Apple and cherry crumble? All the bread is freezable could pop spinach in curries etc bulk them up, definitely Banana bread of muffins with them they’re perfect!”
