Microwaves are susceptible to spillages, splashes and unpleasant smells, which can result in unsightly marks, grease and dirt – particularly if they aren’t tackled immediately. An effective approach is to clean your microwave following each use, or at minimum once weekly, though this isn’t practical for everyone.
Fortunately, there’s one natural component you already possess at home which will make the dirt wipe away effortlessly – even if it’s been lingering there for some time. Cleaning tools firm Seep, which appeared on Dragons Den UK, used TikTok to demonstrate a technique for removing microwave grime with ease, requiring “no elbow grease”.
They titled the clip, which was posted on their @theseepcompany TikTok profile: “No more elbow grease! One simple natural ingredient can do so much.”.
The footage shows an extremely grimy microwave, which has experienced a food “explosion”, but according to the cleaning specialists at Seep, all you require to eliminate it are several lemons.
Numerous people might already possess lemons in their refrigerator, but if not you can obtain them for approximately 30p per citrus fruit from your neighbourhood supermarket.
The initial step involves cutting “a few lemons” into pieces, and placing them in a bowl containing water.
Subsequently, position the bowl inside the microwave, and switch it on for roughly three to five minutes.
According to Seep, the “steam loosens the grime”, enabling you to effortlessly wipe it away using a microfibre cloth.
In the footage, you can observe the microwave appears spotlessly clean once more. If you’re on the hunt for more hacks to clean microwaves without splashing out on cleaning products, mum and content creator Monique Pena has shared her brilliant method.
Firstly, she fills a glass bowl with white vinegar, followed by a few squirts of washing up liquid, then pops it in the microwave and sets it going for three minutes.
Much like the lemon trick, this also softens the grease enough to be wiped away effortlessly.
She then revealed a second hack, which involves just hot water and cinnamon sticks, leaving her kitchen smelling wonderfully of “cinnamon winter scent,” rather than a vinegary odour.
If you decide to use these methods to clean your microwave, do take care when removing the bowl of hot water to avoid scalding yourself.
