If you’re looking for an exciting film to watch this autumn and winter as the weather turns colder, there’s one you can’t miss out on. The 1988 film starring Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman has maintained a strong reputation over the years.

Rain Man follows the story of a selfish L.A. yuppie who learns his estranged father left a fortune to an autistic-savant brother in Ohio that he didn’t know existed. He absconds with his brother and sets out across the country, hoping to gain a larger inheritance.

The film has been named as one of the greatest films of the 80s and it has been featured on a list of the top 50 film masterpieces by IMDb.

On a website called Movie Forums, one person penned: “Tom Cruise is bloody outstanding in this. He’s utterly convincing as Charlie Babbitt, playing the arrogance, heartless qualities perfectly, and he really sells the character change throughout the entire film.

“Dustin Hoffman gets deserved recognition for his performance, but Cruise is on another level here. It’s in his top 3 performances, along with his work in Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia.

“This is nothing like Forrest Gump, as some seem to think. Whereas that film is lightweight and whimsical, this is very blunt, moving film that I wholeheartedly believe to be one of the greatest films ever made. Easily top 50 stuff for me.”

One person who watched the film on IMDb said: “Best acting performance I have ever seen. Dustin Hoffman’s performance as Raymond Babbitt is, bar none, the best acting performance I have ever seen.

“I have never seen an actor get so deeply immersed in a character than Hoffman does in this film. He is excellent here, and he deserved nothing less than the Oscar he won for it.

“As for Tom Cruise, his performance as Raymond’s childish and hotheaded brother is also worthy of note.

“To watch his character slowly shed his ignorance throughout the course of the film was indeed a delight.

“If you have not seen it, don’t deprive yourself any longer. Buy it. It’s a keeper.”

The film not only went on to widespread critical acclaim but it also won four Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman.

On a Facebook group called Netflix Bangers, one person wrote: “I watched Rain Man last night and what a brilliant film, The acting from Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise blow me away absolutely amazing!”

The film’s compelling narrative shed light on the challenges faced by individuals living with autism.

You can watch the film on Amazon Prime.
