When it comes to keeping your home safe, one small electrical oversight could lead to devastating consequences. According to James Harrison, director at Fusion Electrical, a simple plug socket mistake is often overlooked, but it could cost homeowners thousands of pounds.
“Many people don’t realise that incorrectly installed or faulty plug sockets are a major fire risk,” Harrison said. “It’s not just about the immediate danger, but also the financial fallout from damage caused by electrical fires.”
One of the most common problems he encounters is the use of cheap, unregulated sockets. “Homeowners sometimes try to save money by buying low-quality fittings or DIY kits that aren’t up to standard,” he said. “These products fail quickly, causing short circuits, overheating, and in the worst cases, fires.”
But Harrison said that even high-quality sockets can pose risks if not installed correctly.
“Loose wiring and poor connections are silent hazards. They generate heat and sparks that can spread quickly, especially in older homes,” he added.
The financial consequences can be just as severe as the safety risks.
“If a fire is traced back to faulty wiring or uncertified work, insurers may refuse to pay out,” Harrison said. “That leaves the homeowner responsible for repair bills that can run into the tens of thousands.”
To reduce risk, Harrison recommends routine checks on sockets, particularly in properties older than 20 years. Warning signs include scorch marks, flickering lights, buzzing noises, or a burning smell.
“If you spot any of these, call a qualified electrician immediately,” he advises.
For anyone carrying out home renovations, Harrison stressed that electrical safety should be non-negotiable.
“Always ask your electrician what products they’re using. Spending a little more on certified sockets and professional installation is a small price for peace of mind.”
