The arrival of colder weather signals the return of a common household issue – condensation buildup on windows.
According to EnviroVent, a ventilation company, condensation occurs when warm air meets cold surfaces or when there’s excessive humidity in the home.
They explain: “When this moisture-packed warm air comes into contact with a chilly surface, it cools down quickly and releases the water, which turns into liquid droplets on the cold surface.”
When condensation forms on porous surfaces like plaster walls or wood, the water seeps in, creating damp patches. This can lead to crumbling plaster, rotting wood, peeling paint and wallpaper, and an environment conducive to mould and pests.
As mould grows, it releases spores into the air, which can be inhaled and cause airway irritation. Inhaling mould spores is known to trigger headaches, breathlessness, and can be particularly hazardous for those with weakened immune systems, such as the elderly and young children.
To combat this issue, homeware retailer Wilko partnered with cleaning influencer Lyndsay, known as @norfolkavenue on Instagram, to share a three-step method for how to eliminate condensation on their Instagram page.
The first step involves cleaning windows with a mixture of washing-up liquid and water using a sponge.
In the second step, Lyndsay utilises a window vac to dry the windows with “minimal effort”. In the third step of her moisture-busting routine, Lyndsay utilised a dehumidifier to extract dampness from the atmosphere.
At the video’s conclusion, Lyndsay can be seen signalling approval with a thumbs up, as her anti-condensation tips appear to have hit the mark.
