Maintaining a youthful appearance isn’t just about keeping our face free of wrinkles.
The skin on your neck is also susceptible to ageing, especially given how often they’re exposed to sunlight, which is the number one cause of skin ageing.
Several steps can be taken to care for our skin as it ages, including facial yoga and neck massages, which can help skin appear smoother and younger. However, you might not know that you should apply complexion products beyond your cheeks and jawline.
One dermatologist has taken to TikTok to remind users of the products they should use to “keep their neck looking as good as their face.”
Dr Chris Tomassin is a Board Certified Dermatologist and founder of The Dermatology Collective in California. In the video on TikTok, Dr Tomassin shows which products we should use on our neck to keep it youthful.
Starting with sunscreen from Kiehl’s, which he writes is a “non-negotiable” in the morning, the dermatologist and TikTok creator follows this by applying a vitamin C serum from Brandefy before adding Lancôme’s Rénergie Peptide Cream.
Peptides are amino acids often used in skincare products for anti-ageing thanks to their ability to stimulate collagen production, reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture. They trigger skin cells to produce more collagen and elastin, helping skin appear firmer.
While Lancôme’s cream retails for £87, several more affordable options are available on the market, including Boots’s brand peptide serum, priced at £6, The INKEY List’s Peptide Moisturiser, available for £16, and Olay’s cream, which also contains SPF, sold for £18.99.
Whichever brand you prefer to use, many people invest a considerable amount of money in skincare products, so they should get the most out of them by also using them on their necks as intended.
Skincare shouldn’t stop at moisturiser for those with mature complexions. Dr Tomassin finishes off his routine with a retinol at night.
Retinol is a powerful anti-ageing ingredient that accelerates cell turnover and replaces dead skin cells, resulting in a more plumped completion. It is recommended that you introduce the product into your skincare routine in your mid-20s to 30s.
However, it makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, so as we take off our skin as we age, it’s especially important not to skip applying SPF to our face and neck.
Dr Tomassin recommends applying products in a certain order in the morning and at night to maintain a youthful neck. He suggests layering vitamin C followed by a peptide, moisturiser and finishing with sunscreen in the morning.
At night, the suggested order is to start with a retinol, followed by peptide, and finish with moisturiser.
