A crime thriller featuring Tom Hardy alongside a legendary actor in his final performance airs on Film4 this evening, with viewers hailing it as ‘a hidden gem’.

The Drop, which hit cinemas in 2014 after filming wrapped in 2013, proved both a critical and commercial triumph upon release.

The story centres on Bob Saginowski (portrayed by Peaky Blinders star Tom Hardy), a bartender working at his cousin’s establishment who turns a blind eye when local criminals utilise the venue as a makeshift drop-off point.

His uncomplicated life becomes turbulent after discovering an injured puppy.

Seeking assistance from his neighbour Nadia (portrayed by Noomi Rapace) to nurse the animal back to health, a romantic connection develops between them.

Yet a hold-up at the establishment and the reappearance of Nadia’s violent former partner compel Bob to confront uncomfortable truths about those closest to him, reports the Mirror.

The cast includes Sopranos star James Gandolfini in one of his final performances prior to his passing in 2013, alongside Matthias Schoenaerts as Eric Deeds, Morgan Spector as Andre and Elizabeth Rodriguez as Detective Romsey.

On Rotten Tomatoes, audiences awarded the picture an 88 per cent rating with numerous five-star reviews and glowing testimonials.

One viewer said: “Excellent, if largely of it’s type. Strong performances, a quirky and compelling script and a bloody good watch. Utterly enjoyable, if not hugely original.”

Another added: “Tom Hardy’s performance as the main character elevated this film from being just okay to actually really good..

“Raw, exceptionally well acted. Moving in a decidedly unsentimental fashion. Irresistible yet flawed hero,” praised a third viewer.

Another reviewer wrote: “James Gandolfini’s swan song, and as a supporting cast member to Tom Hardy he is excellent as is Hardy. At first, Hardy’s character (Bob) seems like an innocent caught up in the seedier side of underworld inner city crime.

“An observant Catholic on the surface, the viewer soon finds out why he doesn’t take partake in communion. Drags a bit in parts. Perhaps could have been shorter, but the acting is top notch and the twist in the end is worth the wait. Plus there’s an adorable puppy who steals a scene or two.

“Not sure how I missed this movie, but what a hidden gem. Great acting, great writing, great story. There are so many levels to this movie, but don’t take my word for it. Watch it. It’s fantastic, I promise you will not be disappointed!” said another fan.

A further review said: “Might be a slow burn for some, but two of my favorite actors and the movie created a good sense of suspense.”

The Drop airs on Tuesday 10 February at 10.45pm on Film4.
