Hair stylist shares 3 cuts celebrities love that ‘look youthful’

Celebrity-approved cuts are an excellent remedy for ageing hair, with British stylist Laura Elliott of Neäl & Wølf highlighting three styles she swears by. From Victoria Beckham’s shoulder-length bob, Jennifer Aniston’s long locks, stylists note that these shapes lift and frame the face, enhance volume where hair becomes thin, and deliver quick, polished results that appear modern rather than fussy.

Ageing causes changes in hair’s biology: melanin-producing pigment cells decline, sebum production decreases, and cumulative heat and colour damage roughen the cuticle, resulting in duller, drier, and more wiry strands, according to MedlinePlus. The right cut, tone, and finish can make grey hair look intentional and chic; Laura Elliott mentions her preferred short and long styles that “boost volume, texture and dimension for a youthful look.”

1. Texture bob

For a fresh, modern take on the classic bob, try a textured bob like Keira Knightley’s—its airy shape adds lift, definition, and a playful edge.

“In contrast to a traditional blunt bob, the textured bob incorporates soft, layered cuts throughout to create a lived in, tousled look that’s full of dimension,” said Laura.

This low-maintenance style gives hair a fuller appearance, which is great for finer hair types.

The stylist added, “To style the textured bob, start with damp hair, apply a volumising mousse, blow dry with a round brush for lift, create loose waves with a curling wand, finish with a texture spray, and embrace the slightly messy but easy-to-maintain look.”

2. Soft layers

If you want to keep length, soft layers with face‑framing highlights add depth and warmth—a Jennifer Aniston staple that brightens the complexion and feels effortlessly chic.

“Unlike blunt cuts, which can emphasise texture and age‑related changes, soft layers add movement and dimension while maintaining length, helping to disguise thinning hair,” said Laura.

She suggests: “Aim for layers starting at or just below the chin, extending to the shoulders, as this length softens features and balances the face.”

Soft bangs further frame the face. Just ask your hairdresser to help you pick the right length to flatter your face shape.

3. Midi bob

The shoulder‑grazing midi bob is a low‑maintenance, versatile crowd‑pleaser beloved by celebrities like Victoria Beckham.

Laura said: “Falling just above the shoulders, the midi bob adds instant volume and movement to your hair, which is especially flattering as hair naturally thins with age.”

It’s an easy cut to style, too. All you need is a bit of “tousled texture”, notes Laura.

She explained: “Try styling this cut with tousled texture for a youthful yet polished look, and finish with a texturising spray to lock in volume.”

The mid-length is ideal for those looking to strike a balance between the ease of short hair and the styling options of longer hair.
