High street shop closures have become increasingly common across the UK in recent years. As the festive season approaches, more shoppers are having to rely on online retail sites rather than browsing stores in their local shopping centres. In 2025 alone, around 20 retail companies and banks have closed more than 850 of their branches across the UK.
It has led to major losses, with chains such as WHSmith and Homebase disappearing from the high street. Even supermarkets have been forced to scale back, reducing the number of their locations and closing in-store services such as cafés and pharmacies.
According to a warning from the British Retail Consortium (BRC), up to 400 of Britain’s largest retailers, including supermarkets and department stores with a rateable value above £500,000, could face closure if the government proceeds with introducing a higher business rates tax band.
The BRC warns that rising employment costs, taxes, and business rates have already led to the closure of 1,000 stores in the past five years. If 400 more large retailers shut, up to 100,000 jobs could be lost, and councils could lose over £100 million in business rates annually.
The Consortium is now urging Chancellor Rachel Reeves to reform business rates without targeting larger stores, which are crucial for high streets, and support a third of retail workers, thereby driving local footfall.
