A ‘criminally underrated’ mystery thriller led by The Office star B. J. Novak is now available for free streaming on Channel 4. While Novak’s role in the popular sitcom is well-known, his 2022 film Vengeance may have slipped under the radar for many viewers.

The 46-year-old star penned, directed and starred in the horror comedy, which boasts a cast of fellow comedic actors Issa Rae (Insecure) and Ashton Kutcher (That ’70s Show).

The plot centres around New York-based journalist Ben Manalowitz (Novak), who journeys to West Texas following the death of a woman he was casually dating, named Abby (Lio Tipton).

Despite Ben’s belief that she died from a drug overdose, he is persuaded by her brother to probe into the death as a potential murder, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The star-studded cast also includes Boyd Holbrook, recognisable from Netflix‘s fantasy drama The Sandman. He portrays Abby’s suspicious brother Ty, with Euphoria actress Isabella Amara and Disney alum Dove Cameron also playing members of the deceased’s family.

At the heart of this mystery, Novak explores significant themes such as the tensions between big city characters and their rural counterparts.

Given its talented cast and crew, it’s no wonder Vengeance was a hit with critics and casual moviegoers alike. It secured a ‘certified fresh’ 82% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The consensus among reviewers reads: “Writer-director-star B.J. Novak could have taken a sharper approach to this dark comedy’s deeper themes, but if you’re in the mood for a slyly smart mystery, Vengeance is yours.”

Meanwhile, viewers have been sharing their glowing reviews. One penned: “Dark comedy indeed with a killer ending. Starts out light with a thoughtful heavy ending. Well written. Well cast. Well played.”

Another viewer enthused: “B.J. is a genius! Great writing. Unique story line and amazing direction. I loved the whole premise! Very balanced handling as well.”

A third fan gushed: “Enthralling, and criminally underrated. The reason it’s so good is that it’s unlike any other comedy/dramas going.”

They added: “It combines a fair amount of mystery while still remaining true to this fascinating family/town dynamic.”
