Cooker hoods are left ‘shining’ when you clean with one item

There is one little known item you can use to clean your cooker hood filter – and it’s said to leave it ‘shining’.

When cooking day to day many people clean their hobs but often forget to pay attention to the filter above. The purpose of a cooker hood filter is to remove grease, smoke and odours from the air during cooking.

However, it is inevitable that it will become greasy over time, especially if it hasn’t been cleaned in a while. A TikTok user, known as The Clean Freak, shared how she used denture tablets to clean hers.

She posted a video on the platform in which she said: “Oh my God guys, look how gross this is. I always forget to clean the filter for the cooker but I did see on ‘cleantok’ that denture tablets are the best way to clean it so I threw in two into hot water and then placed the filter into the water and left it there to soak for about 15 minutes.

“Once I took it out I drained the water and then gave it a gentle scrub. It was so easy and then look at the final results guys, it’s absolutely shining and clean.”

Denture cleaning tablets use chemical oxidants to remove stains caused by foods that dentures come in contact with daily. The ingredients in denture tablets also help remove bacteria “harboured in the nooks and crannies or dentures, where a denture brush can’t reach”, according to the European Denture Center.

They can also be used for household cleaning as most denture cleaning tablets contain ingredients similar to those found in household cleaners and detergents but in less abrasive forms.

These can include sodium bicarbonate and citric acid together to produce hydrogen peroxide that causes the characteristic effervescence.

It distributes active cleaning ingredients throughout the solution – potassium persulfate, which oxidizes stains; sodium perborate, which acts as a bleach to whiten and kill bacteria and germs; and sodium sulfite to prevent corrosion of metal components.

Denture cleaning tablets can be bought from a range of retailers, such as Boots, Asda, Amazon and Sainsbury’s. The Spruce describes these tablets as an “excellent home cleaning aid”.

Although they are primarily used to clean porcelain and acrylic resin dentures, they can also be used to clean similar household surfaces, like china, porcelain bathroom fixtures, glass and ceramic bakeware and most glass or metal small appliance interiors.

The Clean Freak’s TikTok video has garnered 61,100 views, 739 likes and nearly 50 comments, at the time of writing. One user said: “Need to get some denture tablets.”

Another added: “Wow! That’s [a] good hack!” A third commented: “Oh wow thanks for that, we will be doing that. We [are] always buying expensive products to clean them, ty (thank you).”

And a fourth shared another suggestion of how to clean a cooker hood filter, writing: “Try boiling water on it. It melts right off.”
