An influencer and cleaning guru has shared her cost effective household hack to deter spiders from invading the home using all natural ingredients.
Peak spider season in the UK generally ranges from September to November, with a sharp rise in mid-October.
The eight-legged arachnids are most likely to seek out the warmer environment of domestic homes during this time of year as the autumn aligns with their mating season.
As spiders search for a mate, they are more active and tend to seek refuge from the cooler weather inside homes, sheds and garages.
Influencer Hillary Lauren, better known as @my.horsford.home on Instagram, shared her top tips to keep spiders at bay with her nearly 500,000 followers.
She told her followers to combine one tablespoon of ground cinnamon with two cups of water and let the mixture settle before straining into a spray bottle.
The sweet scented mixture can then be sprayed around entry points into the home and the scent of cinnamon, hailed as a natural insecticide, deters spiders.
For robust defence against spiders and other insects, whole cinnamon sticks can be placed along windowsills or next to any open gaps in doorways, with the added benefit of giving the home a warm Christmas scent.
The influencer also advised homeowners on how to integrate spider repellant into their domestic cleaning routine by using essential oils.
When mopping floors or walls inside the home, Hillary recommended using a combination of lemongrass oil, white vinegar and water to create a powerful bug repellent cleaning solution.
The natural citrus scent of earthy-toned lemongrass oil has insecticidal properties and is used to deter a range of insects including spiders, ants, mosquitoes and flies.
Lemongrass essential oil is also safe for use around dogs and cats when diluted and will leave the home with a gentle fragrance.
