A professional cleaner has shared her list of things that she would never have in her home; they can be unhygienic, be a nightmare to clean, or constantly look dirty.

Sometimes housework can feel like an endless task on top of work commitments, social plans, children, hobbies and more. But whether you love or loathe it, cleaning is important to keep your house hygienic, keeping your items in order, looking nice, and smelling fresh. And some areas can get dirtier quicker than others. Often, what you have in your home can affect this, a cleaner has revealed.

The expert, from Ohio in the US, has her own business called Sparkle & Shine Cleaning. She has been helping people improve their cleaning habits with her simple yet effective tricks.

Recently the businesswoman went viral for revealing five things she would “never” put in her home – and specifically her bathroom. She insists that not having these items will allow for “less time cleaning” and “more time living.”

If you are on social media, it is likely you have seen the rise in people using acrylic containers, storage boxes and shelves to offer a clean look to their home. It also allows you to display your items in an aesthetic way so that people can see them. However, the cleaner notes that they are dust collectors.

Taking to TikTok recently, she said: “Open storage just isn’t smart if you want your house to look clean.” Speaking of shelving, the cleaner notes that adhesive shelving in your shower should be avoided.

She explained: “If you ever move, have fun removing these. It takes so long and it’s just not worth it.”

Also popular nowadays are hexagon tiles. While they look super cool and stylish in any bathroom, the cleaner insists that in reality they are a nightmare to clean.

She noted: “Hexagon tiles – so many grout lines to scrub. Look so bad if not taken care of.”

The cleaner also says she is not keen on storage above the toilet in a bathroom. She added: “Just get a cabinet. You will hate to look at this because all you’ll see is dust.

Someone pointed out in the comments: “I have over the toilet storage cuz I have a small bathroom and there’s no room for a cabinet or anything.”

“The storage above the toilet just is annoying in general, cabinets or not,” commented another.

The cleaner also divided opinion after telling people to get rid of their bathroom mats. She said they are “usually gross”, and notes it just adds another step to your cleaning routine.

In the comments, one wrote: “The bathroom mat thing sent me.” One responded, agreeing and said: “Right, because what else are you supposed to use?”

One offered a solution and said: “Hang it over the side of the tub when not using, bath mat towel instead.” One other said: “We pick up and hang our mat on a towel bar. Our bathroom is very tiny and I hate stepping on a cold wet mat when going to the bathroom.”

One other noted: “I get towel bath mats. I got them from IKEA. When I go to hotels, I like the towel bath mats so I looked for some for my home. They’re easier to clean and no weird rubber backing flaking off in the dryer.”

But one disagreed and wrote: “I need the bathroom mats. I can’t stand walking barefoot on anything other than a rug or carpet. Plus my feet would always be cold on the tile.”
