A vet has revealed a simple addition to your dog’s diet could “change” their life for the better while potentially slashing expensive medication costs. Millions of households across the globe have welcomed dogs into their families, with these beloved pets becoming cherished members.

Dog ownership brings numerous responsibilities, with maintaining their health and happiness being paramount. Similar to their human companions, dogs can experience allergies, which can prove both irritating and distressing for them.

Countless owners turn to social media seeking guidance from fellow pet parents and professionals willing to share their expertise online.

Dr Amir Anwary is a vet who has amassed a loyal following on TikTok through his regular videos, where he offers his professional guidance and recommendations.

In a recent clip, the veterinary expert highlighted the advantages of incorporating omega-3 into a dog’s diet, describing it as “life changing” for them.

Talking directly to the camera, he said: “If you have a dog that is constantly scratching and nibbling themselves, then this video is for you guys.”

The vet went on: “By far, one of the most common conditions I see in dogs is this constant nibbling and scratching and, in most cases, they’re diagnosed with allergies.

“Now, in all of these cases, I always recommend that the owner starts their dog on an omega-3 supplement because it’s so, so, so effective yet there are so many owners out there that have dogs suffering with this that are not using omega-3.”

The vet proceeded to outline why an omega-3 supplement was “so important” for dogs, highlighting it’s “natural anti-inflammatory” benefits which help “tip the scales of inflammation”, diminishing skin problems potentially triggered by elevated omega-6 levels present in certain dog foods and treats.

Omega-6 is an essential fat the body requires for normal growth and cellular function. While necessary and useful in moderate amounts, it must be balanced with omega-3 fatty acids to prevent the inflammation it can trigger.

Moving on to another advantage, the vet continued: “Omega-3 is really, really good for the skin layer; it strengthens the skin layer, it holds hydration, it holds water, it makes the coat healthy and shiny.”

He said “the skin is where dogs experience their allergies” so by bolstering the health of their skin barrier, it ought to help minimise the unwanted consequences of an allergic response.

The Kennel Club confirms that research has demonstrated omega-3 for dogs “can control inflammation and help with wound healing”, while also proving beneficial for their skin and coat, and supporting stiff, aching joints.

Dr Anwary stated “several studies have shown that when you give a dog omega-3”, it reduces the need for harsher – and more expensive – medications like “cortisone”, “Cytopoint” and more.

In additional text accompanying his video, he explained: “Apoquel and Cytopoint are definitely effective but they are purely symptomatic treatments. They add no real value”.

The vet concluded: “Why would you not use an omega-3 supplement that reduces the need for these very expensive medications, and it strengthens your dog’s skin and it acts as a natural anti-inflammatory?”

“It has so many benefits yet dog owners will stick to using an injection every single month that merely treats the symptoms but isn’t adding any extra value to their dog’s health.”

In the caption accompanying his video, the vet added: “Stay for 2 minutes and this will change your dog’s life! Omega-3 is the best supplement you can use for dogs with skin problems!”

He reiterated it does take time for the health benefits to be seen and recommended opting for a high quality omega-3 supplement.

If you have any concerns or questions about your dog’s health, it’s best to book an appointment with your vet to get a tailored check-up, assessment and treatment plan.
