As temperatures drop and the rainy autumn weather takes over, gone are the days of open windows and sun-bathed rooms. Instead, a much dreaded problem arrives that becomes the bane of many Brits’ daily lives, condensation.
But a simple and inexpensive household trick could bring some solace. The tip, shared by a mother in a popular Facebook group, has left users amazed at how effectively it keeps windows clear and dry.
In an online forum, the mother explained that she had been struggling with damp, misty windows in her home, particularly in bedrooms and the bathroom.
Seeking a quick solution, she decided to try a method she had spotted online: placing a piece of chalk on the windowsill.
She said: “Every morning we woke up and the bedroom windows had condensation on them, and long term it would probably have turned into mould, so I tried placing a piece of chalk on the sill.
“For the last three mornings our windows have been dry, absolutely dry.”
She shared photos showing crystal-clear windows with a single stick of white chalk sitting on the sill.
According to her, the hack has worked in multiple rooms, keeping both bedrooms and a bathroom free from condensation. She noted that even large three-pane windows could be kept dry using just one stick of chalk.
The mother also offered a tip for households that only have coloured chalk available.
She added: “Maybe put a plate or bowl under it just in case [of stains].”
The trick has resonated with many parents and homeowners searching for low-cost solutions to tackle the everyday problem of condensation.
While there are various commercial anti-condensation products on the market, this method offers a cheap, chemical-free alternative that requires nothing more than a piece of ordinary chalk, often already found in homes with children.
