To some, this is common sense. But according to one bin man, not everyone thinks this way. Taking to TikTok, the self-proclaimed ‘number one bin man’ in the UK said there is one annoying habit we all need to stop – and sooner rather than later.
The binman issued the urgent appeal to residents across the UK who have a food waste bin about a common mistake that’s “contaminating your bin”. The ‘UK’s No1 BINfluencer‘ said: “If you’re gonna use your bin, please take the food out of the packaging if you are going to throw it away.”
“I know you left your wraps in the back of the cupboard, you forgot they were there. Now they’re about two months out of date. Take it out of the plastic bag and put it in your food waste bin. I know it’s gonna stink a little bit, but you are literally contaminating your bin by doing that. Take it out of the wrapper. You can get biodegradable bags. Some councils let you use paper bags.”
Whilst acknowledging that certain local authorities permit loose food waste, meaning you do not need to put in it a bag, the waste collection worker pleaded with the public and cautioned that using appropriate bags prevents unpleasant odours and reduces the need for weekly bin cleaning. So if you can use a bag, please, do, he stressed.
The TikToker also shared some peculiar observations about the festive season. He recalled: “Some people, when it was Christmas, wrapped up the turkey in foil. That’s not food.
“Do not do it. So please, put food waste in a bag and then happy days. Everyone is happy. Your bin gets collected – and you haven’t got to deal with the food waste for another week.”
In the comments, some people said that they could never put their food in a bin without a bag, with one commenter saying: “Isn’t that just common sense though? I always do it.”
But it seems not, with the number one bin man replying: “You would think so.”
