Fans of heartwarming Pixar films are in for a delight this afternoon (Sun) as the fantasy comedy-drama Coco is set to air on BBC.
The film revolves around Miguel, a 12-year-old Mexican boy who accidentally finds himself in the Land of the Dead. He seeks the assistance of his deceased musician great-great-grandfather to return him to his family and overturn their ban on music.
While Pixar is renowned for producing top-notch films – remember Toy Story 1, 2, 3 and 4? – Coco stands out as one of their finest, boasting a near-perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes and widespread critical acclaim.
CinemaScore’s audience poll awarded the 2017 film an ‘A+’ grade – a distinction shared by fewer than 90 films in the service’s history and only the sixth Pixar film to earn such a rating, with Up in 2009 being the last. The film also bagged two Oscars – one for Best Animated Feature and another for Best Original Song, reports the Mirror.
This ‘incredible’ family film ‘brimming with emotion’ has received heaps of praise from a broad spectrum of viewers.
BBC film critic, Victoria Luxford, praised the movie, saying: “A fine addition to the Pixar legacy… a very sweet film about family, very thoughtfully put together. It has that unmistakable mixture of comedy and sentiment that you associate with a Pixar movie. Great fun.”
Meanwhile, Charlotte Harrison from Den of Geek described it as: “Tender, a tad macabre, fun-packed, and just plain beautiful. Coco is quite, quite brilliant.”
The film, featuring Anthony Gonzalez, Gael Garcia Bernal and Benjamin Bratt, also received rave reviews from viewers.
One reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes said: “Coco is more than just an animated film – it’s an emotional journey that hit me straight in the heart. The movie beautifully blends music, family, and tradition.”
Another viewer added: “Amazing movie. Really makes you think what lies beyond once one passes on. It’s also great to show no matter the age or person you can always make a difference, along with giving second chances.
“The movie is full of surprises and wonderful for children and adults.”
A third reviewer said: “Coco is Pixar’s most human film. The movie delivers a compelling story centred around memorable characters that feel alive.”
Fans will be thrilled to hear that a sequel, Coco 2, is reportedly in the works. However, for now, they can enjoy the original on BBC One at 3:15pm this afternoon (Sun).
