Baby name that was once very popular set to go ‘extinct’ in 2024 – full list

If you’re welcoming a baby into the world this year, it’s likely you’ll be scratching your head over what name you’re going to decide on.

A good place to start for some inspiration is to check out the list of most popular names, which comes out every year.

And thanks to pop culture, films, music and other trends, new names pop up all the time – meaning others can fall out of fashion very easily.

The baby name experts at  BabyCentre took a look at the data from 2022-23 and have identified the choices with the biggest dip in popularity, putting them at risk of going completely extinct this year.

Some of the choices were once hugely common, but fluctuating trends mean they don’t get picked as often any more in favour of new choices.

In terms of boy’s names, it was the American ones that seemed to be falling out of favour the most – with choices like Keanu, Ryder and Buddy all seeing a dip in popularity.

As well as this, Welsh boys’ names such as Griff and Bowen have also taken a hit, with surnames as first names becoming more unpopular in recent years.

And when it comes to baby names for girls at risk of extinction, it seems as though the unusual spellings are on their way out. For example, Kiera, Alyssia and Elyse all lost popularity in 2023, so they could dip even further this year.

While certain old-fashioned names for girls were very popular last year, such as Ivy and Ada, some other choices – like Flo, Vivienne and Peggy – were not so common last year.

Here’s a list of the top 20 most endangered name choices for babies this year.
