People have been urged to add one thing to the rooms where they dry laundry, as it could help clothes dry twice as fast in the colder winter months.
It can be frustrating when you hang your laundry to dry inside onliy for it to take several days for it to dry completely. This not only makes it take longer for your to get your next load done, but can also lead to the clothes smelling bad due to dampness.
The reason that laundry takes longer to dry in the colder, winter months is because there is less energy available in the colder air for evaporation, and winter air is often more humid. Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air, so as temperature drops, the air’s ability to absorb water from clothes decreases, slowing down the drying process.
So how can you overcome this and avoid having your clothes take days to dry? The team at Which? have shared their go-to hack for getting laundry to dry twice as fast this winter by adding one small thing in the room where you want to dry your clothes.
“This hack will help you dry clothes nearly twice as fast,” they said at the start of their TikTok video.
They went on to explain that you simply hang up your wet washing inside on a clothes rack, before putting a dehumidifyer underneath or next to the clothing rack.
They went on to explain that they’d put this hack to the test, by making to identical loads of washing before hanging them to dry, once with the dehumidifyer on and one without it.
“And the verdict? Using a dehumidifyer cut drying time by nearly half,” they revealed in the video.
They went on to reveal that the dehumidifyer had sucked up around two litres of water from the air, which also helps to prevent mould growth in your home. However, it does come with an extra cost.
Using the dehumidifyer to help dry the clothes had added £1.50 to their energy bills, which are more expensive than what it would have cost to run a tumble dryer for one cycle to dry the clothes
“So, if you have a tumble dryer, it’s likely to be the cheaper option,” they explained.
Several people soon took to the comment section to share their thoughts, as many praised the simple hack of using a dehumidifyer to help dry their laundry.
“Been using my dehumidifier for 8 years now, couldn’t be without it…,” one person said, while someone else wrote: ” I may be really sad but the amount of excitement I get from checking my washing that dried so quick and emptying the chamber is unreal.”
A third person went on to share: “My dryer can do a 9kg load in 50 mins and costs 50p.”
However, not everyone was impressed by the hack, as they claimed it was unnecessary.
“Or just let it air dry and save energy,” someone said. But to this, another viewer replied: “This is why so many people smell like damp, because they didn’t dry their clothes quick enough.”
