Adopting a dog is a significant commitment and needs a lot of consideration. It can take time for dogs to secure their forever home, as well as for the perfect owner to step forward and change their lives for the better. But even when this occurs, it doesn’t always result in the happy ending the dog truly deserves.

Starfish Animal Rescue, based in Illinois, USA, has issued a heartbreaking appeal for a foster home for a cheerful and affectionate dog who desperately needs a new home, having been surrendered by his family after eight years together. Writing on their Facebook page, the shelter revealed that the dog, named Winchester, was adopted from them in 2017 and thought to have found his permanent home.

However, almost nine years on, they received a call ‘that no rescue wants to get’. Winchester had been dropped off at the nearby DuPage County Animal Services without the rescue organisation’s knowledge or any chance to step in.

All that accompanied the dog as he was surrendered was a handwritten note from his family requesting that he’d be given extra love as it was going to be ‘very hard on him’, along with a small cute costume placed beside him. Older dogs frequently find unexpected surrenders particularly challenging compared to younger dogs, as they will likely have spent most of their lives in one home, which is Winchester’s situation.

The rescue stated: “After eight years, Winchester was suddenly separated from the only life he has ever known.” Upon hearing of the surrender, a volunteer from the rescue centre promptly visited the shelter the following morning to collect the dog, who was described as “still wagging his tail, still trusting, still hopeful,” despite his ordeal.

The rescue team confirmed the pooch was now safe with them, but in a temporary situation. As such, they were urgently seeking a foster home for him while assessing his long-term needs.

The delightful pup, weighing ‘no more than 30lbs’, was said to be very friendly, constantly wagging his tail in the company of people. “This boy did nothing wrong. He deserves softness, patience, and stability – especially after losing everything familiar to him,” the rescue centre stated.

Within a few days, the rescue team announced that they had found a suitable and loving foster home for Winchester, promising to keep everyone updated on his progress. Despite the positive update, many people expressed their sadness over Winchester’s story in the comments section.

One person wrote: “That’s so sad. I’m glad you all rescued him. He is just adorable.” Another user added: “This is terrible!!! Poor baby!”

The foster carer also commented, providing an update on Winchester: “I have been fostering Chester for two days now, he is playful, loving, loves belly rubs, if you like to adopt Chester, let us know.”
