It’s been a decade since Matt Damon starred in Jason Bourne, his fourth film in the spy franchise based on the Robert Ludlum novels.
In recent years, rumours abounded that All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger is attached to helm Bourne 6.
The only thing is, the latest scoop is that Damon is reportedly being dropped from the films for a reboot.
Jeff Sneider, who broke the news, tweeted a clarification today: “For the record, I never said Matt Damon won’t be back. I said he could be back to pass the torch in some respect.
“But yes, it sounds like Universal has its eye on a new, younger actor to lead the franchise…”
This means that either Universal will totally reboot the franchise with a new Bourne actor like a new Bond, or they will have another agent star in the series like Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross in the fourth film, The Bourne Legacy. Whatever the case, the star most likely to take over (according to the bookies’ race) is also one of the next 007 favourites, Jacob Elordi, who is on 2-1. The 28-year-old Australian is up for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar next week. Meanwhile, Timothée Chalamet, who is up for the Best Actor Oscar, is on 3-1.
Coral’s Dan Stevens said: “It’s not just the next 007 that film fans are waiting to see, there’s now the role of Jason Bourne to be filled also, and the early odds suggest it could be Jacob Elordi and Timothée Chalamet battling it out to replace Matt Damon.” Take it all with a pinch of salt, but also in the bookies’ race are Cosmo Jarvis on 4-1, Glen Powell and Michael B Jordan on 8-1, Tom Hiddleston on 10-1, Nicholas Hoult and Henry Cavill on 12-1, Jason Statham and Jeremy Tenner on 16-1 and Jack Champion on 20-1.
