A woman was in awe when she checked her pet camera and realised what her dog was doing. The Labrador, called Rambo, had been left at home with his new rescue sibling while his owners were at work.
Dog lover Mare and her husband had chosen to adopt a shelter dog who was “days away from being euthanised at a kill shelter”. Kill shelters, also known as open-admission shelters, are establishments that accept any animal that has been relinquished, irrespective of their behaviour or health.
When capacity is reached, these shelters often have to euthanise certain animals to create space for new arrivals while preventing overcrowding. Animals may be put to sleep for various reasons, whether due to behavioural problems, deteriorating health, or being unsuitable for adoption.
Mare was eager to spare Charlie from this outcome. She told Newsweek: “Our shelter dog, Charlie, was days away from being euthanised at a kill shelter in Oklahoma. So our local shelter went and picked him up and brought him back to where we live in Illinois.”

Charlie had spent approximately a week at the shelter but was finding it difficult to adjust to kennel life. When Mare and her husband met him, they immediately fell in love and brought him home to join their black Labrador, Rambo.
Since the couple needed to return to work the following day, Mare installed a camera to keep an eye on the dogs during her shift. Upon reviewing the footage, she was quickly moved to tears after witnessing Rambo’s actions.
In the video, which has been posted to TikTok, Charlie can be seen nervously resting on a dog bed.
Rambo then walks over, climbs onto the dog bed and turning around before settling down and nestling against Charlie.
Charlie gives him a cautious sniff before appearing to relax further. The pair look peaceful and comfortable.
Over the top of the video, Mare included text stating: “Watching your Lab comfort the new shelter dog while you’re at work”.
In the caption beneath the clip, she included a crying emoji to express some of the feelings the footage evoked for her.
In the comments section, other TikTok users were eager to express their reactions. One viewer said: “They should be friends forever. I know it’s part of fostering but ugh this hurts and warms my heart!”
Mare confirmed: “We adopted him today! They get to be besties forever!”
Another viewer commented: “‘It’s going to be okay. Our parents are pretty cool. Just relax with me bud’ – your dog probably”.
A third stated: “This is literally the sweetest thing I have seen all day”. Mare replied: “It was melting my heart at work watching this!”
A fourth wrote: “My heart dude, dogs are literally angels”. Meanwhile, someone else added: “You hit the jackpot with these babies!!”
