Prime Video fans are being urged to watch the “funniest film ever made” with a 2026 Oscar nominee.
US comedy Bridesmaids, which debuted in 2011, was directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig. The film follows a single woman called Annie (played by Kristen), whose life is a mess – her cake shop was notably shut down in a recession, forcing her to rent a room from a pair of English siblings.
When she learns that her lifelong best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), is engaged, she has no choice but to serve as the maid of honour. The synopsis continues: “Though lovelorn and almost penniless, Annie, nevertheless, winds her way through the strange and expensive rituals associated with her job as the bride’s go-to friend.”
Determined to make things perfect, Annie leads Lillian and the other bridesmaids down the road to the wedding. But her rivalry with Lillian’s new friend, Helen, causes several problems along the way.
Helen is played by Australian actress Rose Byrne, who is currently receiving awards praise for her role in psychological drama If I Had Legs I’d Kick You. The 46-year-old star won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a struggling mother last month, and is nominated for an Academy Award and a BAFTA award.
Rose quickly gained traction in Hollywood following her hilarious performance in Bridesmaids, with critics particularly praising her and Kristen’s comedic timing during a laugh-out-loud speech scene, which continues to be shared online.
The film’s cast also includes Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, Chris O’Dowd, Matt Lucas, Rebel Wilson, and Jon Hamm.
After its release in 2011, Bridesmaids was a critical and commercial success. It grossed over $306 million worldwide on a $32.5 million budget, earning multiple Oscar nominations. The film has served as a touchstone for discussion about women in comedy, with several publications ranking it among the best comedy films of the 21st century.
However, Prime Video viewers haven’t got long to watch the iconic movie, as it is set to leave the streaming platform next Sunday (February 8). After that, fans can stream the film for free on ITVX.
Almost 15 years on from its release, and fans continue to share their love for the film online. Bridesmaids also remains a hit among critics, boasting an impressive 89% score on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes.
One fan wrote on IMDb: “Definitely one of the funniest films ever made. I always have so much fun watching it,” with another adding: “I love this movie SO MUCH. I watch it every year. FUNNY, with a great message! You’re the problem, but you’re also the solution.”
A third said: “This is in the top 3 comedies of all time. It’s a classic. Has the perfect balance of stupidity, hilarity and heart. Plus, great characters and performances across the board. Ten out of ten. No notes.”
At the time of its release, The Independent on Sunday wrote: “Unashamedly smart… Bridesmaids has been hailed as a groundbreaking blow for American female cinema,” while The Age added: “Bridesmaids is just fall-down funny.”
Bridesmaids is available to stream on Prime Video until Sunday, February 8
