Choosing a name for a baby can be a difficult process, especially if you’re settling on something with meaning behind it. However, recent research has shown that there are a number of girls’ names which face going extinct in the coming years, as they slowly fade in popularity.

Gifting website Personalisedbee analysed names from recent ONS baby name data, identifying the top 10 names that have dropped in the rankings between 2023 and 2024, predicting which are most likely to drop out of the 100 baby names for girls this year. The brand revealed some of the names included former favourites, such as Scarlett, a once-popular choice, is slowly falling out of fashion with parents. Included in some of the most forgotten names are fairly familiar, but are not standing the tests of time like others.

Personalisedbee revealed that the top three girls’ names likely to go extinct this year include Jessica, Lola, and Scarlett. The brand noted that the name Jessica has dropped 12 places in just one year, moving from 83rd to 95th.

The name was given to 573 babies in 2023, falling to 483 in 2024, suggesting that this once-classic favourite is steadily fading from popularity. Lola also slipped in popularity, going down eight ranks, from 79th to 87th.

595 babies were given the name in 2023 compared to 543 in 2024. Personalisedbee noted that even playful, modern names can gradually fall out of fashion. The other loser is Scarlett, which fell seven places, from 72nd to 79th.

Once a trendy choice, the name went from 634 babies in 2023 to 610 in 2024, reflecting a slow decline as parents explore fresher alternatives.

Prashant, a naming expert from Personalisedbee, has shared her thoughts on the declining popularity of some names: “Names are a lot like trends in fashion or home décor. They can rise quickly when they feel fresh or modern, but just as fast they can fall out of favour as parents hunt for something new and unique.”
