An “underrated” Christmas film that has become a festive “ritual” for many over the years is set to air for free today on television.
With December now upon us, families across the nation are immersing themselves in the Christmas spirit as the big day draws near. Amidst the chaos of Christmas shopping and festive activities, there’s no shortage of seasonal films to savour.
Whether you’re a fan of timeless classics or prefer the light-hearted romance of Hallmark offerings, there’s a wealth of options perfect for family viewing.
This weekend offers a plethora of choices guaranteed to ignite the festive mood, whether you’re seeking full immersion or simply need a backdrop while wrapping those last-minute gifts.
Today, one particular festive treat not to be missed is airing, hailed by fans as a “classic” and an annual re-watch for some. Despite its divisive nature, Jingle All the Way remains a cherished favourite for many and will be broadcast on Channel 4 today (December 7) from 3.45pm, reports the Mirror.
Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, this 1996 film tells the tale of a young boy who yearns for a specific toy, Turbo Man, for Christmas. However, his work-obsessed father, Howard (played by Arnold), has been too preoccupied to remember.
On a hectic Christmas Eve, long before online shopping revolutionised the festive season, a father frantically searches for his son’s must-have toy that’s completely out of stock.
According to Rotten Tomatoes, the plot follows: “Workaholic Howard Langston (Arnold Schwarzenegger) wants to make things up to his son, Jamie (Jake Lloyd), and wife, Liz (Rita Wilson). He promises to get Jamie the hottest toy of the season, Turbo-Man — even though it’s Christmas Eve and the toy is practically sold out.
“As Langston hunts down the elusive gift, he runs into mailman Myron (Sinbad), another father on the same quest. With the clock winding down, Langston’s moral code is tested as he starts to learn the real meaning of Christmas.”
Whilst it’s been around for years, the film continues to charm audiences, with one Rotten Tomatoes critic declaring: “It’s an adorable family Christmas classic!”.
Someone else commented: “I love Arnold! Grew up watching this movie and watch it each year at Christmas. Very funny and wholesome. Perfect for Christmas time!”.
Yet another viewer enthused: “Definitely worth a watch! Classic Christmas movie depicting the previous reality of Christmas shopping before the internet. Lots of Christmas music, fun themes and generally a good movie for everyone.”
One fan remarked: “Jingle All the Way is way better than people give it credit for. It’s loud, chaotic, and totally aware of what it is, and that’s exactly why it works.”
Meanwhile, another observed: “Jingle All the Way is seriously funny and underrated.” One viewer simply stated: “This movie does have bad reviews but for me its a must watch 90s classic.”
For certain audiences, it has evolved into a “Christmas ritual”, yet not all are persuaded by its charm. Some reviewers have labelled the production as “loud” and “unfunny”.
Jingle All the Way can be watched on Channel 4 on Sunday, December 7 at 3.45pm.
